new and old gap logos

Oh dear. Here’s something that’s destined to be filed in the ‘what were they thinking?’ pile. High Street retailer Gap have unveiled their new logo and it’s a real turkey. 9CQZKPGGTJYS

The appalling update would seem to perfectly showcase the vision of a company which has entirely run out of ideas. It looks as if Gap have simply used a stock logo from Microsoft Publisher.

Gap President Marka Hansen offers up this choice piece of corporate bullshitery “We chose this design as it’s more contemporary and current. It honors our heritage through the blue box while still taking it forward”. Uh?

Such has been the uproar regarding the new identity, Gap have been moved to ask customers to send in their own ideas on how to improve it. I would imagine that’s not exactly what they intended at the outset.

UPDATE: Gap has announced that they are reverting to their old logo after only a single week. I have to say that this smells a bit like the whole thing has been a publicity stunt (bearing in mind that the only use of the new logo was on the website which would have cost nothing to change and not on shop signage, labeling etc…). The saying goes that any publicity is good publicity but if this was a stunt, I’m not sure that looking like you’re completely out of touch with design trends is a particularly good idea for a fashion retailer. Very strange.
